CHAPTER FIVE
After a restless night, Paddy woke early and got down to business. He jumped on the line to Dublin and introduced himself.
âMrs Maguire, Iâm calling about that painting that you bought a while ago from the Ornate gallery in Dublinâ¦â he started to explain. Mrs Maguire started to talk.
âI sold that to an American couple about four months ago. Might have been Smith, no Smithson I think it was. Lovely couple.â
âAh, do you have pertinent details for those customers?â Paddy asked. It was evident the caller on the end of the line was an older lady. Carefully spoken, carefully coiffed.
âWell, I would have to check my records. If memory serves the lady in question is launching a gallery of her own in New York. Sheâs investing in her art gallery business with income from her private airport.â
Airport?
âCan you tell me more about how you met the Smithson's and where I might be able to contact them? I think Iâve found some items that belong to them that became lost in transit.â As far as white lies go Paddy thought it was a relatively harmless one.
âCertainly. I met them in a restaurant in Dublin after an art exhibition. We got talking about art and I told them I was looking to sell one of the pieces I had bought by an artist named Finnigan. My customer told me that she was looking for pieces to display in a gallery, and they came to my house the next day. He was a silver fox. Fairly tan. He wasnât overly tall. She sure had some pair of heels on. He had a very broad American accent, reminded me of the gangster movies you see on TV. She was blonde and thin. Elegant, yet not over-the-top, you know. Small diamond studs in her ears. She did all the talking and he seemed to make arrangements, paperwork and shipment.â
Things started to tumble together in Paddyâs mind, like the shining, shifting coloured pieces seen in a kaleidoscope. âThank you, Mrs Maguire. Youâve been very helpful,â he told her. Paddy left some room for the caller to collect her thoughts.
âOh, and one more thing. They brought a large man with them. Like security. It was strange. I asked if they were transporting gold bullion today or something. She just said her husband liked to be cautious when they were travelling, especially when they were buying things for the gallery.â
Airport! Theoretically, the art pieces could have been shipped by air and left dockside in the container. Mr Tevez fits the description of the man described by Mrs Maguire, but if it was him, why did he lie and where was this Mrs Smithson? If these people are linked, how?
Paddy sat, thinking. He had to get some runs on the board with this case, but what there was so far didnât hold much water. Mrs Smithson and Mr Tevez could be linked in some way through the airport. Maybe Mr Tevez was protecting his clients. It could be
